Series Review: Small But Deadly
"Fans of venomous animals should enjoy this series. While the books have definite appeal for reluctant readers and browsers, they also offer plenty of information for reports. The volumes cover each creature's range/habitat, life in a group, physical characteristics, life cycle, and venom/poison (or the diseases it causes in the case of Bacteria and Mosquitoes). The titles each end with a section on people's relationship with the subjects, including how they sometimes can actually help us. The spreads have about two paragraphs of text, large color photos with captions, and "Deadly Data" fact boxes..."

Series Review: US Military Forces
"Excellent for report writing as well as for general perusing, this attractive set provides a well-organized overview of each of the five branches of the U.S. military. Clear and informative photos with bold red and camouflage backgrounds lend lots of eye appeal, and sidebars provide an additional array of facts, many of them related to history or technology. Women are given a commendable share of the spotlight in the chapters on famous fighters as well as in sidebars, such as "Women in the Coast Guard" and "First Woman General." Chapters about the organization of each branch, its stated missions, and its future round out a series that contains far more information than one might expect at first glance."

Series Review: Civil Rights Crusaders
"While this series covers familiar ground, it nonetheless provides solid facts about six civil rights fighters who shaped American history and helped pave the way for African Americans to gain equality. It delivers basic information about these crusaders, but it mostly focuses on their accomplishments and their positions in the civil rights fights of their respective times. The pages alternate between the text (with "Let Freedom Ring" side boxes that provide supplemental information) and large, captioned color photographs. Vocabulary words in bold are defined at the end of each book. With their clear information, short sentence structure, and linear writing, these books would be useful for basic reports."

Series Review: Graphic Mythical Creatures
"These action-packed graphic novels are sure to be hits in most libraries. While each slim book only features one full story involving the creature, an introduction, accompanied by more traditional artwork or photographs, gives more information, and a follow-up page provides examples of tales from other countries or literature. The titles offer a lot of information, and the wide-ranging stories reflect a diverse appreciation for world mythology. Share them with fans of graphic novels or mythical monsters."

Series Review: Wild Wheels
“This series is sure to be as popular as the subjects themselves. The light, somewhat breezy texts move quickly, presenting the history of the cars and just the right amount of information. Additional discussion and statistics appear in “Inside the Machine” boxes. The vocabulary is right on target. The bright, colorful illustrations are excellent, usually filling the spreads as background to the narratives. Boxed captions are informative, and are placed so that they do not detract from the illustrations . . .”
